Improvisational Travel Workshops
Want to learn more about improvisational travel? Consider taking one of my hands-on workshops. All workshops are held in small groups with time for questions and answers, acting out practice scenarios, and the chance to test your skills live on the streets of Boston. It’s a great way to try out some improvisational travel techniques with guidance and support.
Workshops will start in Spring 2012, with time and cost to be announced. I expect to offer Urban Biking for Beginners, and one more based on your input.
If you are interested in taking a workshop, please indicate your preference using the form below. You will receive an email with details about a month before it is scheduled to start.
Improvisational Travel Workshops
Urban Biking for Beginners
Biking is a great way to explore a city, and unlike the T, you can go wherever you want. But how do you deal with the weather and the crazy drivers? Actually, it's lots of fun and not that hard. This class will show you how. Topics will include navigating through traffic safely, dealing with weather, nighttime riding, gear essentials (with DIY suggestions), basic bike maintenance, and more. Strong emphasis on safety. Each session will include some instruction followed by riding time to practice the new techniques on your bike.Hitchhiking for Beginners
Have you read my hitchhiking articles but aren't sure if you could actually do it? Want to hone your people-reading skills to avoid creeps and get rides with friendly people? This is the class for you. Topics will include approaching someone for a ride, judging their response, identifying green and red flags, choosing a good location, making conversation, what to do if you want to get out, how to thank your ride, and more. Again, strong emphasis on safety. Each session will include several case studies and opportunities to practice roleplaying your skills in the classroom. The final sessions will include actually hitchhiking somewhere and discussing your experiences.Experimental Travel in Boston
"Experimental travel" is a unique way to explore a new place by turning it into a game. For example, get into a taxi and ask the driver to take you to their favorite restaurant. Or, draw a diagonal line between two faraway points in the city and try to walk that line. Or, put on a blindfold and ask a friend to escort you through the city. Each session will involve trying one of these strategies in pairs or groups around Boston, then meeting all together to discuss your experiences over dinner.[maybe one more?]
Private Sessions
I am also available for a private consultation, where I can answer your travel questions and give specific advice tailored to your needs. The fee is $50 per hour. To ask about a consultation, please contact me at anna@diyexplorer.com.
